Culture and society have various pictures of what a marriage should be and diverse purposes for marriage. If you take a survey, you will be surprised by some of the responses you will get to the question; What is the Purpose of Marriage?

Let’s start with you.

What is the purpose of marriage?

God does not leave us in the dark concerning this question. He is the author of marriage and has the right definition of the purpose of marriage.

In Ephesians 5:25–32, the Apostle Paul presents marriage as something far more significant than a social arrangement. He describes the relationship between husband and wife in the light of Christ’s relationship with the Church.

Marriage carries a spiritual significance that extends beyond the two individuals involved.

Let’s explore five kingdom assignments every Christian couple should understand.

1 Your union should help you become more like Christ.

One of the most overlooked purposes of marriage is its potential to develop Christlike character.

When people prepare for marriage, they often focus on finding the right person. They consider compatibility, physical attraction, financial stability, spiritual maturity, communication, and shared interests.

.These things matter.

However, there is another question worth asking:Am I becoming the kind of person who knows how to love another person in a Christlike way?

Marriage brings two people with different backgrounds, personalities, expectations, habits, and experiences into an intimate relationship. Even when two people genuinely love each other, they will not always see things the same way.

There will moments when patience and forgiveness are necessary.Moments when selfishness must give way to consideration, pride must give way to humility, and the desire to win an argument must give way to the desire to understand one another. These moments can reveal areas of our character that still need growth.

This moments build Christlike Character.

This does not mean that marriage automatically makes people spiritually mature. Nor does it mean that every painful experience in a relationship is something God intends a person to endure. Rather, a healthy marriage can become a context in which two people encourage one another’s growth and learn to live out their faith in practical ways.

2 Your Union Is Meant to Demonstrate the Love of Christ

In Ephesians 5:25, husbands are instructed to love their wives as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. This is a profound standard of love.

Christ’s love for the Church is not presented as shallow affection or a relationship sustained only when everything is convenient. It is demonstrated through sacrifice, commitment, and a willingness to seek the good of the one loved.

A Christian marriage, therefore, offers an opportunity to make the love of Christ visible through the way a husband and wife treat one another.

In practice, this will include honouring your spouse in private as well as in public; offering support during difficult seasons and celebrating one another’s growth without competition.
