Few things can make marriage more emotionally exhausting than feeling unwelcome in your spouse’s family. You attend family gatherings and notice the coldness. A comment is made that sounds like a joke but leaves you uncomfortable. You notice comparisons. You feel criticised, excluded, or simply tolerated.Sometimes, you may even tell your husband how you feel, only to hear:“That’s just how my mother is.”

So, what do you do when you genuinely feel that your mother-in-law does not like you?The answer requires wisdom, maturity, and healthy boundaries.

First, Don’t Be Too Quick to Conclude That She Hates You.

This is an important place to begin not every uncomfortable interaction means that your mother-in-law hates you.She may be struggling with the changes that marriage has brought. She may be grieving the loss of the closeness she once had with her son. She may have difficulty expressing herself. She may have expectations about how her son’s marriage should look.

Yes, there are also situations where a mother-in-law is genuinely controlling, hostile, or disrespectful. The point is not to excuse unhealthy behaviour. It is to make sure you are responding to what is actually happening rather than to assumptions.

“The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.” (Proverbs 18:17)

Before deciding, “She doesn’t like me,” ask yourself:

What do I actually know?

What has she said or done?

Is this a repeated pattern or an isolated incident?

Have I interpreted her actions correctly?

Have I ever tried to understand her perspective?

Wisdom begins with seeking the truth.

Secondly, don’t Compete With His Mother.

One of the most damaging responses is competition.

Marriage is a covenant union and you are your husband’s covenant partner.

Do not get into rivalry with his mother even if she puts up attitude or actions that make it seem like you both are in competition for your husband’s affection and attention.

You may find yourself thinking:“Let me show him that I am better than his mother.”“Let me make him choose me.”“Let me work harder to earn his mother’s approval.”

You are not required to defeat your mother-in-law.

You are not required to become someone else simply to be accepted.

Your place as his wife is not established by defeating his mother.
It is established by the covenant you share with your husband.
